Seeking to cut your energy costs and concerned about the environment, a GeoThermal system is the right choice because it delivers what you want and what the world needs:
- Highest energy-efficient system available (30 EER, 5 COP)
- Lowest ownership cost of any heating-cooling system.
- Comfort with even temperature and humidity control
- High reliability and not subject to damage by weather or vandalism
- Safe, clean, and quiet operation with no flame, chimney or odors
- Healthy, sustainable environment (internal and external)

GeoThermal systems are made up of two basic components; an underground heat exchanger and a groundsource heat pump. While temperatures above ground vary greatly during the year, temperatures below ground remain fairly constant.
In winter, when the temperature underground is warmer than the air temperature, tubes carrying water or freeze-resistant liquid bring heat from the ground to the heat pump that extracts the energy and distributes it through the house.
In summer, cooling mode the system reverses its flow, extracting heat from the home and restoring it with underground. In many systems, some of the excess heat is moved through another heat exchanger called a desuperheater to produce domestic hot water.
Retrofits account for about 50% of our geothermal installations, especially where the home currently has oil or propane. The easiest retrofits integrate into existing forced-air systems. Although GeoThermal is often used in conjunction with radiant floor heating, the water the GeoThermal boiler produces is generally not hot enough to make it compatible with hydronic baseboard systems. In this case, forced air ductwork is usually added, which automatically enables air conditioning.
In 2009 a 30% federal tax credit was created for all geothermal systems meeting EnergyStar criteria. This tax credit covers the whole of the geothermal system. NY State also has incentives and financing options available. Visit www.dsireusa.org for more information.
